SKIN NEEDLING FAQ
robina, gold coast
question 1:
What is Skin Needling/ Microneedling?
Skin needling, also known as microneedling, collagen induction therapy, or dermal needling, is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment designed to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.
As we age, collagen and elastin naturally decline. These two essential proteins are responsible for maintaining skin firmness, elasticity, smoothness, and overall skin health.
Skin needling uses a specialised device with tiny medical-grade needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response, encouraging the body to produce new collagen and elastin.
The result is firmer, smoother, brighter-looking skin with improved texture and tone.
This treatment is suitable for a wide range of skin concerns and is commonly performed for skin rejuvenation, acne scarring, pigmentation, fine lines, and overall skin quality.
question 2:
How Does Skin Needling Work?
Skin needling is performed using a precision medical device that gently glides across the skin surface.
The device contains fine needles that create microscopic punctures in the skin. These tiny channels stimulate the body's natural repair process and encourage new collagen and elastin production.
At the same time, the micro-channels allow active skincare ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin, making treatments and skincare products more effective.
The treatment process stimulates:
• Collagen production
• Elastin production
• Skin regeneration
• Improved circulation
• Enhanced absorption of active skincare ingredients
Over time, this leads to stronger, healthier and more youthful looking skin.
question 3:
What Skin Concerns Can Skin Needling Treat?
Skin needling is a versatile treatment that can improve a wide range of skin conditions.
Skin concerns commonly treated include:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Acne scars
• Chicken pox scars
• Stretch marks
• Enlarged pores
• Uneven skin tone
• Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
• Dull or tired skin
• Rough skin texture
• Sun damage
• Sleep lines
• Excess oil production
It is an excellent treatment for patients wanting overall skin rejuvenation and healthier looking skin.
question 4:
Benefits of Skin Needling?
Skin needling offers numerous benefits for skin health and rejuvenation.
Key benefits include:
• Stimulates collagen and elastin production
• Tightens and firms the skin
• Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
• Improves overall skin texture
• Minimises enlarged pores
• Reduces pigmentation and dark spots
• Improves acne scars and other scarring
• Reduces the appearance of stretch marks
• Brightens the complexion
• Improves skin tone and radiance
• Helps regulate oil production
• Minimally invasive treatment with minimal downtime
Many patients notice their skin looking smoother, brighter and healthier after just a few treatments.
question 5:
Areas that can be Treated?
Skin needling can be performed on multiple areas of the body.
At Restore My Glow we often treat multiple areas in one session to achieve the best overall skin rejuvenation results.
Common treatment areas include:
• Full face
• Neck
• Décolletage
• Lips
• Back of the hands
• Arms
• Stretch marks on the body
• Thighs
• Abdomen
The neck, chest and hands are often neglected, so including these areas helps maintain a more youthful overall appearance.
question 6:
Skin Needling for Pores and Skin Texture?
Skin needling helps refine and smooth the skin’s surface by stimulating new collagen growth.
As collagen increases, the skin becomes firmer and more structured, which can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and uneven texture.
Patients often notice:
• Smoother skin
• Reduced pore appearance
• More even complexion
• Fewer breakouts
question 7:
Skin Needling for Oil Production and Acne Scars?
Skin needling can also assist in regulating sebum (oil) production, which may help reduce excess shine and congestion in the skin.
For patients with acne scarring, microneedling stimulates collagen production beneath the scar tissue, helping to:
• Soften acne scars
• Improve skin texture
• Smooth uneven areas
• Reduce the visibility of scars over time
Multiple treatments are usually required for optimal scar reduction and do require more treatments compared to skin needling for skin rejuvenation.
question 8:
Skin Needling for Brighter Skin and Improved Skin Tone?
One of the most noticeable benefits of skin needling is improved skin brightness and radiance.
As collagen production increases and skin renewal improves, patients often experience:
• Brighter complexion
• Improved skin tone
• More radiant skin
• Reduced dullness
Skin needling helps stimulate healthy skin turnover, resulting in fresher and more glowing skin.
question 9:
Can Skin Needling Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Yes. Skin needling works extremely well when combined with other skin treatments to maximise results.
Skin needling allows for a greater penetration and absorption of your active ingredients in your anti-ageing skincare- due to the micro channels being open post treatment.
At Restore My Glow we often combine skin needling with:
• Skin booster treatments
• Peptide and vitamin boosters
• Chemical peels
• PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for skin rejuvenation
• Hair growth treatments for scalp health and hair density
Because skin needling creates micro-channels in the skin, active ingredients penetrate deeper, boosting hydration, skin repair and overall skin glow.
question 10:
What is the Downtime After Skin Needling?
Skin needling has minimal downtime compared to many other skin treatments.
Immediately after treatment the skin may appear:
• Pink or red
• Warm or slightly sensitive
• Similar to a mild sunburn
This usually settles within a few hours to 48 hours.
Most patients can return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment.
question 11:
Post Treatment Recovery Support?
To support healing and reduce redness we offer several post-treatment options:
• LED light therapy masks to calm inflammation. We stock the Airyday LED take home masks that you can use in the comfort of your own home.
• Vskin sheet masks with hyaluronic acid and vitamins. These are an optional add on or can be used that evening at home.
• Oxygenetix breathable post-procedure makeup to reduce redness and provide coverage. We stock this in clinic so let us colour match you.
These treatments can help soothe the skin and speed up recovery.
question 12:
What Happens During a Skin Needling Appointment?
Your appointment begins with a comprehensive skin consultation.
During this consultation we will:
• Review your medical history
• Discuss your skin goals
• Assess your skin condition
• Review your skincare routine
• Take clinical photos for progress comparison
• Discuss costs, risks and what to expect, as well as your post care instructions.
The treatment process includes:
1. Skin preparation – The skin is thoroughly cleansed and all make up removed.
2. Skin needling treatment – The microneedling device is gently passed across the skin creating micro-channels.
3. Collagen stimulation – The body begins its natural healing process producing new collagen and elastin.
4. Post treatment care – Soothing post procedure products are applied to support healing.
The depth of the needles is adjusted based on skin thickness, treatment area and comfort level, as well as the skin goals.
For improvements in scarring, the depth is usually increased.
question 13:
How Many Skin Needling Treatments Are Needed?
The number of treatments depends on your skin goals and concerns.
General skin rejuvenation
Minimum 3 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart.
Acne scars or stretch marks
Approximately 4–6 treatments may be required depending on severity.
Pigmentation
Most patients see improvements after 3–4 treatments.
Your progress will be monitored and additional treatments may be recommended if needed.
For an improvement in treatment results we recommend skin needling with a peptide skin booster for increased hydration, and a boost of skin loving vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
question 14:
When Will I See Results?
Many patients notice improvements in skin texture and brightness within a few days to a few weeks.
However, collagen and elastin production takes time.
Typical result timeline:
• Initial glow: 3–7 days
• Improved texture and tone: 2–4 weeks
• Ongoing collagen production: up to 5 months after your 3rd skin needling treatment.
Results continue to improve as the skin produces more collagen and elastin.
question 15:
What should I wear to the treatment?
Please wear a loose-fitting V neck top so we can easily access your neck and decolletage. If you forget we do have robes available for you to change into.
Please arrive with a clean makeup free face.
Skin Needling Aftercare
After your skin needling treatment, the skin should be cared for similar to a mild sunburn. Keeping the skin hydrated and protected with SPF 50+ sunscreen daily is essential for optimal healing and results.
It is normal for the skin to appear pink or slightly red immediately after treatment. Some areas may appear redder than others. This usually settles within 24–48 hours, although some patients experience only mild redness that resolves within a few hours.
The skin may also feel slightly tight or rough for a few days as the skin naturally renews and regenerates.
question 16:
First 24 Hours
During the first day after treatment, your skin may feel warm and sensitive.
Please follow these guidelines:
• Mild to moderate redness and sensitivity may occur for 12–48 hours.
• If the skin feels overly warm, hot, or stinging, you may apply a cool compress or ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth.
• Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol and caffeine.
• Avoid touching the treated area for at least 4 hours after treatment.
• Avoid sun exposure and harsh environmental elements such as wind.
• Avoid swimming, excessive sweating, saunas, spas, and hot showers on the treated area.
• After 4 hours, you may gently rinse the skin with water in the shower and carefully pat dry with a clean towel.
• Apply a medical-grade moisturiser at least twice daily to keep the skin hydrated.
• Do not apply makeup on the day of treatment. Light makeup or breathable post-procedure makeup such as Oxygenetix can be used after 24 hours if required.
question 17:
2–5 Days After Treatment
During this stage the skin may feel slightly dry, tight, or mildly swollen as the healing process continues.
-
Mild redness and subtle swelling may still be present.
-
Avoid shaving, waxing, or exfoliating the treated area.
-
Minimise sun exposure and continue wearing SPF 50+ daily.
-
Avoid all active or harsh skincare ingredients, including:
-
AHA
-
BHA
-
Glycolic acid
-
Salicylic acid
-
Retinol / Vitamin A
-
Do not scratch, pick, or rub the skin if light flaking occurs.
-
question 18:
After 5 Days
By this stage, most superficial skin cells will have naturally shed and the skin should begin to feel softer, smoother, and more even in tone.
The new skin will still be more sensitive to sun and environmental exposure, so ongoing care is important.
Please continue to:
• Use SPF 50+ sunscreen daily. We recommend Airyday 50+ sunscreen that is available in clinic as it is hydrating and is dermatologically approved, even for sensitive skin.
• Maintain regular hydration and moisturising.
Additional precautions:
• Avoid spray tanning or fake tanning products for 2 weeks after treatment.
• Avoid bleaching, waxing, laser treatments, IPL, or chemical peels for 4 weeks.
question 19:
Important
Proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal healing and results.
Incorrect care of healing skin may increase the risk of:
• Delayed healing
• Infection
• Skin irritation
• Scarring
If you have any concerns following your treatment, please contact the clinic for advice. These are also provided at the time of your treatment.

question 22:
Does skin needling hurt?
Most patients find skin needling to be very tolerable. A numbing cream can be applied before the treatment to minimise discomfort if needed.
During the procedure you may feel a light vibrating sensation or mild scratching feeling as the device moves across the skin. Areas where the skin is thinner, such as the forehead, may feel slightly more sensitive.
Your comfort is always monitored during the treatment and the needle depth can be adjusted depending on the treatment area and your comfort level.
question 23:
How long does the Skin Needling Treatment Take?
A skin needling appointment usually takes 45–60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.
This includes:
• Skin consultation
• Cleansing and preparation
• Numbing cream (if required)
• The skin needling treatment
• Post-treatment soothing products
If additional treatments such as chemical peels are added, the appointment may take slightly longer.
question 24:
How many skin needling sessions will I need?
The number of treatments required depends on your skin concerns and goals.
General recommendations include:
• Skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing: 3 treatments
• Acne scars or stretch marks: 4–6 treatments
• Pigmentation or uneven skin tone: 3–4 treatments
Treatments are usually spaced 3–4 weeks apart to allow the skin time to heal and produce new collagen.
question 25:
How long does it take to see results from skin needling?
Many patients notice an improvement in skin glow and texture within a few days after treatment.
However, collagen production takes time. The most noticeable improvements usually occur over the following 4–8 weeks as new collagen and elastin develop.
Skin improvements can continue for several months after your treatment series.
question 26:
How long do skin needling results last?
The results of skin needling can last several months to a year, depending on your skin condition, age, lifestyle, and skincare routine.
Because collagen naturally breaks down over time, many patients choose to have maintenance treatments every 3–6 months to maintain their results and keep their skin looking healthy and refreshed.
question 27:
Is there any downtime after skin needling?
Skin needling has minimal downtime compared to many other skin treatments.
After treatment your skin may appear:
• Pink or red
• Slightly warm or sensitive
• Similar to a mild sunburn
This usually settles within 24–48 hours.
Most patients return to normal activities shortly after their treatment, although exercise, heat and sun exposure should be avoided for the first 24 hours.
question 28:
Is skin needling safe?
Yes, skin needling is considered a safe and effective cosmetic treatment when performed by a trained and experienced professional.
At Restore My Glow, treatments are performed by a Registered Nurse, ensuring high safety standards and clinical expertise.
A thorough consultation is always completed before treatment to ensure the procedure is suitable for your skin and medical history.
question 29:
Who is a good candidate for skin needling?
Skin needling is suitable for many people who want to improve their skin quality and overall complexion.
It is commonly recommended for patients wanting to treat:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Acne scars
• Enlarged pores
• Uneven skin tone
• Pigmentation
• Stretch marks
• Dull or tired looking skin
A consultation will determine whether skin needling is the best treatment option for your skin concerns.
question 30:
Can skin needling be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Skin needling works extremely well when combined with other treatments to enhance results.
Common combinations include:
• Skin booster treatments
• Peptide boosters
• Chemical peels
• PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
• LED light therapy
Combining treatments can improve skin hydration, collagen stimulation and overall skin rejuvenation.
question 31:
What should I avoid before skin needling?
To reduce the risk of irritation, you should avoid certain products and treatments before your appointment.
For at least 3–5 days before treatment, avoid:
• Retinol or Vitamin A products
• AHA or BHA exfoliants
• Strong chemical peels
• Excessive sun exposure
Your clinician will provide personalised pre-treatment advice during your consultation.
