Question 1.
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is the name of a condition caused by excessive and uncontrolled sweating. We cool our bodies down by sweating but some patients can sweat excessively. This may be worse during any climate, but particularly in a warm climate or times of stress and anxiety. It can also be exacerbated by certain medical conditions.
Hyperhidrosis can be classified as primary or secondary hyperhidrosis and localised or generalised.
Generalised is when it affects most of all of the body and localised commonly affects the armpits, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, face or other body parts.
Primary hyperhidrosis
Primary hyperhidrosis commonly occurs during childhood or adolescence and secondary hyperhidrosis is less common and can present at any age.

Primary hyperhidrosis may persist for life and in some patients, it can improve with age and generally there is a family history of it.
In primary hyperhidrosis triggers of excess sweating may include:

Fever

Anxiety

Spicy food

Hot weather

Exercise.
Secondary hyperhidrosis
Secondary hyperhidrosis can be caused by certain medications and chronic diseases such as:

Obesity,

Menopause,

Cardiovascular disease,

Over active thyroid,

Parkinson’s disease,

Drugs,
-
Alcohol,
-
Caffeine and,
-
Corticosteroids.

Question 2.
What is the impact of excess sweating?
It can greatly interfere with one’s daily activities of living and self-esteem. Some patients need to change their clothing many times a day, and some cannot wear long sleeved tops as the clothing becomes stained and damp.
In addition to the impact of daily life, many patients feeling embarrassed. Wet skin folds can also cause skin irritations, infections, rashes and chafing.
There is a solution to reduce the amount of under arm (axillary) sweat that is performed in clinic, with an experienced cosmetic RN who has been performing this treatment for many years.
Question 3.
How does a hyperhidrosis treatment work?
A product is placed into both underarms to reduce sweating. It works by blocking the nerves responsible for stimulating the sweat glands, and helps to normalise the amount of sweating.
Question 4.
Does a hyperhidrosis treatment hurt?
There are a few short acting injection stings and some injections won’t be felt at all. No anaesthetic is required. Ice is available and stress balls to help alleviate any discomfort some patients may feel.

How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.

Question 6.
What to expect during the treatment?
Please wear a sleeveless top if possible so we can easily access your under arms.
You will have a consultation with your cosmetic nurse first and your medical history will be reviewed. You will also be given the opportunity to speak with a doctor who will also discuss the risks associated with the treatment and have a consultation with you. They will authorise your treatment. Both underarms will be thoroughly cleansed and marked out, and then both axillae’s will be treated.

Question 7.
How long do the results last??
It is a procedure that can last up to 5-12 months and results can be seen after one single treatment.
Individual results and longevity vary based on lifestyle, metabolism and medical history, and these are discussed during the consultation.
Question 8.
When will I start to see a reduction in the amount I sweat?
It takes up to 2 weeks to start to notice a reduction in the amount of sweating.

Most patients see a reduction of 81-87% in the amount they sweat after this treatment (as per the International Hyperhidrosis Society). Individual results vary based on certain medical conditions and other factors that are discussed during the consultation process.
Question 9.
When should I come back for another treatment?
When you notice an increase in the amount you sweat, or you are starting to change your clothing often, we recommend a maintenance treatment.
Question 10.
Is anyone suitable for this treatment?
Not everyone is clinically suitable for this treatment.
A consultation is required before your treatment to discuss your medical history and your suitability for the treatment. It is during this time the risks, treatment itself, post care instructions, alternative treatments, and costs are discussed. You will be given all the information needed to make an informed decision. Before your treatment you will be given the opportunity to speak with a doctor and ask any further questions.
Question 11.
Who cannot have this treatment?

You must be:

Not be pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive

If you have had a recent covid or flu vaccination, please wait 2 weeks before or after your scheduled appointment

Certain autoimmune disorders and medical conditions

Be fit and well

Not be undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Your suitability for this treatment will be discussed with your cosmetic nurse and also the prescribing doctor and if you are not suitable for this treatment, alternative treatments discussed,
Question 12.
Are there any pre-treatment recommendations I should follow?
Some medications can cause an increased risk of bruising so if you are prone to bruising, we recommend avoiding these but generally patients don’t need to follow any pre treatment guidelines.
Medications and vitamins such as:

Evening primrose oil,

Green tea.
All of these can increase the risk of bruising, bleeding and swelling. We recommend avoid taking these for 2 weeks before your treatment (unless advised to continue for medical reasons from your medical doctor).
Question 12a.
What after-care instructions should I follow?

These are important to follow, to get the best outcomes and they are similar to the after care for reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the face. These are emailed to you at the time of the treatment. If you are unsure, please get in contact with the clinic.

Avoid any deodorant

Avoid rubbing the arm pits

Avoid wearing tight clothing that might cause friction or cause the product to move from where it has been strategically placed. This is important for at least 24 hours.

Avoid any exercise for 24 -48 hours
-
Avoid extremes of temperature for a minimum of 48 hours post treatment and if you do bruise easily avoid any exercise and caffeine prior to your treatment.

Who is not a suitable candidate for a hyperhidrosis treatment?

You should not have this treatment if you:

Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.

Have had a COVID or flu vaccination within two weeks of your scheduled appointment.

Have any medical conditions that prevent you from having a treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on your face (this will be discussed during your consultation at our Gold Coast location).

Not all patients are suitable for this treatment so it is during the consultation that this will be determined, or after speaking with the prescribing doctor.

Is a consultation required before treatment?

Yes, a consultation at our Robina clinic is required before this treatment. During this consultation, we will:

Question 22.
What pre-treatment recommendations should I follow before my appointment?

To minimise the risk of bruising, bleeding, and swelling, we recommend avoiding the following medications and supplements for two weeks before your treatment (unless medically necessary):

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs

St. John's Wort

Ginseng

Ginkgo biloba

Evening primrose oil

Vitamin E

Caffeine (including green tea).
If you bruise easily, avoid exercise and caffeine on the day of your treatment, before coming in.
Question 23.
What aftercare instructions should I follow after my treatment?

The aftercare instructions are similar to those for reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the face, with one exception: you do not need to keep your head upright. It is imperative to follow our post care instructions.
For at least 24 hours after your treatment at our Robina, Gold Coast clinic:

For at least 48 hours after treatment:

Avoid exercise.

Avoid extreme temperatures (hot showers, saunas, etc.).
