SKIN REJUVENATION PRP
(platelet rich plasma)

PRP skin rejuvenation is a scientifically proven non-surgical treatment that utilises the body's own healing properties to enhance skin texture, tone, skin elasticity and firmness, and slow down the visible signs of ageing.

The PRP skin treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production and cell renewal. Collagen and elastin are important for skin health as they provide structural support, strength, and firmness to the skin.

By harnessing the power of concentrated platelets, PRP rejuvenation offers a natural and effective solution for achieving a refreshed, resilient, and revitalised complexion.

WHAT IS PRP?

PRP is also called Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP injections are rich in active proteins and allow for the formation and release of growth factors that promote healing, trigger collagen, and improve skin elasticity, thereby rejuvenating the skin from within.

PRP also treats a range of skin conditions from fine lines and wrinkles, acne and chicken pox scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and sun damaged skin.

WHAT ARE PLATELETS?

Platelets are found in your blood and play an important role in the body’s natural healing process. They are made up of cytokines and proteins that promote growth, healing, tissue repair, collagen production, improve blood flow, reduce pain and stimulate cell proliferation.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

PRP is a targeted skin treatment, but can also be combined with other treatments to target volume loss or reduce the appearance of wrinkles.  A customised treatment plan specific to your skin goals and medical history will be discussed during the consultation process.

Many areas can be treated including:
•    Full face
•    Fine lines under and around the eyes
•    Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.  Perioral lines can appear as smokers’ lines (even if you have never smoked) due to the repetitive movement around the mouth
•    Neck lines and neck bands
•    Decolletage and creases on the chest
•    Hands: to improve crepey, fine and delicate skin and reduce the appearance of bulging veins
•    Tear troughs
•    Nasolabial lines: smile/ laughter lines that extend from the nose to the mouth
•    Marionette lines
•    Forehead: horizontal lines and furrows
•    Cheeks and mid face
•    Sleep lines: commonly found in the eyebrows and can extend up to the forehead and down to the cheeks
•    Stretch marks on the stomach, thighs or chest.

ADVANTAGES OF PRP SKIN TREATMENTS

1. Natural: PRP utilises your own blood to inject your platelets into your own skin.  As we are not injecting anything else, the risk of an allergic reaction is reduced.

2. Improves skin texture and tone. The regenerative benefits of PRP will improve the quality of skin by evening and smoothing out your complexion, reduce the appearance of scarring, pigmentation, pores and uneven skin tone.

3. Reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Improving skin quality and targeting wrinkles by increasing collagen and elastin production.

4. Promotes Collagen production. Collagen level decline with age resulting in a loss of firmness and elasticity.  The growth factors in PRP will stimulate collagen production.

5. Customisable to your skin goals. PRP can be combined with other aesthetic treatments as well as skin needling and skin boosters to further enhance your results. The entire treatment will be tailored specifically to individual skin goals.

6. Long lasting results. Individual results do vary based on individual skin concerns, skin types, and the specific skin conditions we are treating. Some patients can enjoy the skin rejuvenation benefits for up to a year.

WHAT OTHER USES DOES PRP HAVE?

PRP can also be used to stimulate hair growth, prevent hair thinning and improve scalp health.  The full scalp can be treated, eyebrows, beard, moustache or patches of hair loss/ hair thinning to prevent the progression to balding.  The PRP for hair treatment is performed in a similar way to the skin PRP treatment and is also available in clinic.

PRP has also been used to treat sporting injuries and heal damaged tendons, ligaments, joints, bones and muscles.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

  • A blood sample is taken from you (just like a blood test) and your blood is placed in a specialised centrifuge machine that separates the red blood cells from the nutrient dense plasma.

  • This nutrient rich plasma is then injected into the superficial layer of your skin, targeting the areas of concern.  The platelets contain all the tissue regenerative growth factors that stimulate your body’s own collagen.

  • A variety of skin injecting devices may be used, for maximum skin results.   A multi head stamping needle, micro injecting and skin needling.

WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE TREATMENT?

  • Consultation: A consultation is performed first where we review your medical history and discuss your suitability for the treatment. All the treatment options are discussed during this time.

  • Procedure: The procedure and what to expect is discussed in detail. This is where you gather all the information needed to make an informed decision.

  • Appointment booking: We will find a time to book you in for your first treatment or you can make an online booking.

  • Preparation: Your pre PRP guidelines are given to you at this time and all post care instructions discussed so you can start to follow the recommendations in the lead up to your first treatment.

  • Consent: As this is a medical treatment you will also have the opportunity to speak with a doctor who will authorise your prescription and treatment for the PRP.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR PRP TREATMENT?

We want to optimise your outcomes from each treatment and avoid anything that could hinder your inflammatory response, so following our pre-treatment recommendations and guidelines is imperative in the lead up to each session.

The quality of your platelets, and treatment results, are greatly affected by diet and lifestyle so making these changes for at least a week before your treatment will improve your outcomes. These will also reduce your risk of any unnecessary complications.

These include:

  • Avoiding any corticosteroids

  • Following a low-fat diet for a few days before (no avocado, seeds, grains or fatty foods or fatty fish).

  • Eat green leafy vegetable- these will improve your platelet count. Broccoli, zucchini, sweet potato, spinach, cauliflower, legumes and fresh fruit are excellent choices.

  • Being well hydrated before you come in and drinking an additional 600 mls of water before your scheduled time.  This allows for an easier venepuncture as being dehydrated can make obtaining a blood sample difficult, so the procedure may be delayed. Hydration is crucial in the PRP process.

  • Avoiding alcohol and caffeine 24 hours before. This will negatively impact your platelet quality.

  • No smoking/ vaping for 24 hours before your appointment (ideally 72 hours). This delays the healing process and regenerative effects of the PRP treatment.

  • No chemical peels, laser or skin peeling treatments 7 days prior. The skin needs to be intact with no red, inflamed skin or active cold sores.

Preparing for your PRP skin treatment recommendations are also available on the website or contact Lisa if you need any clarification.

THE PROCEDURE

  • After your skin consultation, being able to speak with a doctor and completing your consent forms, the treatment preparation can begin.

  • Patient comfort is important to us so a strong numbing cream is applied to each treatment area.  During this time your blood is taken (similar to a blood test).

  • Your blood is then spun in a centrifuge machine to separate your platelets from the red blood cells.

  • The concentrated platelets containing growth factors are then transferred into syringes and injected into your skin.

  • Strict safety measures and a sterile environment are ensured throughout the procedure to minimise any infection or complication risk.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The treatment itself takes up to 2 hours for the first appointment with the numbing cream application, venepuncture, preparing and separating the platelets, and then injecting the PRP back into your skin. Subsequent treatments will be slightly shorter.

WHEN SHOULD I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

The healing process and tissue regeneration process begins immediately after the treatment, with visible skin results varying from patient to patient.  These can be seen anywhere from 6-12 weeks with continued skin improvements up to 1 year.

Following pre and post treatment recommendations will impact the quality of your platelets and treatment outcomes so the procedure commences at the pre-treatment stage, before you are lying down in the clinic having your first injectable session.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

A series of 3-5 treatments spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart is the recommended treatment protocol.

This does vary according to health and age of the skin, treatment area size, and skin condition. Sometimes additional treatments may be needed, but we will monitor your treatment outcomes and keep you informed throughout the process.

Maintenance treatments at 6-12 months are recommended to maintain skin regeneration results.

Having realistic expectations of the treatment is essential. This is a skin rejuvenation treatment so the lifting effects of the skin are not the same as a facelift, particularly if there is a lot of loose or excess skin present.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT & POST TREATMENT GUIDELINES

  • Post care instructions are given at the time of treatment and also emailed to you. Your RN and prescribing doctor also provide their contact details if you need to clarify anything.

  • The area is to be kept clean, dry, make -up free and avoid touching it that day.  We do recommend to avoid washing your face that night, and do not put any skincare products on it. These post care instructions can also be found on the website under “Post care instructions for PRP”.

  • The treatment area may feel warm like a sunburn and some areas may be red and a little swollen. They are generally mild and will resolve in a few days.

  • Around the eyes and mouth can bruise and be more sensitive. Bruises can be covered up with Oxygenetix post procedure foundation the following day. It is a breathable and healing foundation that accelerates recovery times and can be used as an everyday makeup and after any other skin treatments.

  • Avoid any exercise or a hot shower that evening.

  • Paracetamol can be taken that evening.  It can also be taken before your scheduled time as some areas are a little more sensitive to treat than others. Do not take any ibuprofen or aspirin.

  • We do recommend using your Airyday LED face mask to help reduce inflammation.  These are available for purchase in clinic and contain red, blue and infrared lights that can be used and combined according to your skins needs at the time. Use the red-light post PRP and these can be used after any other skin treatments.

  • Using skincare with active ingredients will also help to reduce the signs of ageing and can be recommenced the following night.

  • Daily 50+ sunscreen to the treatment areas. Avoid getting any sun exposure.  We stock Airyday 50+ sunscreen and make up primer that is light, hydrating, non-greasy, and also contains vitamins C, E and F. Wear it every day before your serum and moisturiser.

  • Avoid any active skincare that night and the following day you can wear make up and follow your usual skincare routine.

  • An optional Vskin post procedure mask to use the following day is available in clinic to reduce any redness and speed up recovery/ healing times.

HOW CAN I OPTIMISE MY RESULTS?

PRP can also be combined with a skin booster to treat more areas during the same treatment e.g. neck and face or neck and decolletage. This allows for a larger area to be treated as well as the addition of hyaluronic acid and skin nourishing vitamins and minerals. This is a dual treatment and doesn’t take any longer to inject, as the two products are mixed together at the commencement of the treatment.

Strictly following pre and post treatment recommendations are important to improve your platelet quality and therefore improve your treatment outcomes.

Using daily medical grade skincare with active ingredients. These are available for purchase in clinic if you are not using active skincare already. We stock Bioline skincare range as it is organic, plant based and contains active skin ingredients scientifically proven to reduce the signs of ageing. Samples are available for you to try when you are in the clinic.  They suit all skin types for skin needing extra hydration, elasticity improvements, fine lines reduced or for sensitive and reactive skin.

Daily use of 50+ sunscreen.  We love and stock the Airyday 50+ sunscreen as it is light and hydrating with the added benefits of vitamins and a make-up primer.  It also doesn’t feel like a sunscreen as it is non greasy but very nourishing.

WHO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR PRP?

This treatment isn’t suitable for everyone.  A skin consultation is required first to review your medical history and discuss your skin goals. After reviewing this your suitability for the treatment or alternative treatments are discussed.

Some medications you regularly take may impact the treatment and your platelet quality, but we do have other skin rejuvenation treatments available.

If obtaining a blood sample from you (when having a blood test) is difficult or if you are needle phobic then this treatment may not be right for you too.

We have other skin rejuvenation treatments that do not require taking your own blood.  Skin boosters (we have a few to suit all skin types), The Pink Treatment, Crystal care skin serum plus skin needling treatment, chemical peels and skin needling all improve the quality of skin and target many skin conditions.  More information on these can be found on the website.

Patients cannot have this treatment if you are taking or undergoing any of these:

  • Anti-inflammatory tables (NSAID’s) have been taken within 48 hours of the treatments.  These also cannot be taken for 2 weeks after the treatment.

  • Any medical condition that causes platelet dysfunction, low platelet count, sepsis or blood disorders.

  • If you are undergoing treatment for cancer

  • If you are immunocompromised

  • If you have been taking antibiotics for a recent illness or fever

  • Steroid injections within 4 weeks either side of the treatment

  • Anaemia.
