WHAT IS A RECEDING CHIN?

The term is used to describe when the chin slopes slightly backward towards your neck, resulting in the lower jaw appearing to be positioned further back than the upper jaw. It is also called retrogenia.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF A RECEDING CHIN?

Genetics, ageing, thumb sucking and an overbite can cause a recessed chin.

A receding chin or jawline affects the proportions of the entire face, and the chin and the nose significantly affect facial harmony.  A receding chin can cause a double chin and insecurities in men and women.

Some are born with a receding chin and others can develop one over time. It is a natural part of the ageing process as bone and soft tissue around the jaw is naturally lost. The jawline then starts to become less pronounced and can start to recede.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CHIN AS WE AGE?

Volume is lost in the fat pads (these are all over the face and in the chin) as well as bone loss, a loss in muscle mass, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

These volume changes make the lower face appear heavy, contributing to the formation of jowls, reduced definition in the jawline, loose skin and less surrounding structural support, and then the chin begins to move backwards.

With age the lower third of the face is getting shorter, the chin becomes shorter, marionette wrinkles appear, and the corners of the mouth begin to turn down. Some patients will also lose volume around the entire chin area, jowls develop, and the mental crease (horizontal chin wrinkle) appears and gets deeper.

HOW THE CHIN AFFECTS FACIAL HARMONY & SHAPE

The position of the chin plays a crucial role in defining the facial silhouette and influencing how other facial features are perceived in relation to one another. When the chin is recessed, it can create an imbalance, making the nose appear larger or the neck less defined.

When assessing the chin, we aim to replace lost volume in the chin to strike a balance between the nose, lip and chin.  This line is used to measure facial harmony and balance. It is measured from the tip of the nose, to the tip of the lips, and to the tip of the chin. It is also called the E- Ricketts line and is an important aspect to consider when assessing the face.

Strategically replacing lost volume in the chin will make a recessed chin project more and bring it forward so it is better aligned with other facial features.  Supporting the marionette wrinkles and lifting up the corners of the mouth will help to slow down the visible signs of ageing around the entire mouth and chin, and assist with delaying the formation of jowls. As well as creating chin projection, this treatment can lengthen the chin area to create more definition.

At Restore My Glow we know no two faces are the same and every patient’s anatomy is different so this treatment is tailored to the individual. Knowledge of facial ageing, facial balance and how this impacts the visible signs of ageing is something we consider when tailoring a treatment plan specific to personal chin goals, facial shape and structure.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR A RECESSED CHIN

A surgical option is a chin implant and this was the only option (apart from braces) until volumising treatments were developed. Now there are non-surgical options to re shape the chin and volumise the entire area to slow down the visible signs of ageing.

CHIN RESHAPING AND VOLUMISATION: THE NON-SURGICAL WAY

The chin can be re shaped, projected and lengthened to replace lost volume where it is needed the most.  One of the other advantages of this treatment is the jawline will appear tighter and smoother as it can help to lift sagging jowls. The specific details of this treatment are discussed face to face during the consultation process.

Benefits of volume replacement in the chin:

•    Helps define the jawline,
•    Tightens and smooths skin,
•    Gives a receding chin more projection and definition,
•    Lengthens the chin,
•    Improves the shape of the chin,
•    Balance facial features (like a prominent nose),
•    Restore lost volume,
•    Smooth chin wrinkles and marionette lines,
•    Fill in a cleft,
•    Create more definition between the face and neck,
•    Can soften dimples.

WHAT IS THE MENTAL CREASE?

The mental crease is a horizontal groove below the lower lip and above the chin.

CHIN CREASE (MENTAL CREASE) REDUCTION

This can be achieved in a few ways by reducing the strength of the mentalis muscle first, then the wrinkle is treated by lifting and softening it to reduce its depth and size.

A crease in the chin can develop over time and this wrinkle is called the mental crease. When the mentalis muscle contraction is reduced, the chin appears longer in length. In addition, it will improve the skin surface by reducing chin dimpling and the appearance of the orange peel effect.

Then softening the mental crease wrinkle to lift and replace lost volume to the chin area can be performed.

HOW THE CHIN AFFECTS OTHER FACIAL FEATURES

Treating the chin will help to prevent jowls and can affect other facial features. It can also impact the nose, lips and entire perioral area.  Volumising the chin will support the entire surrounding areas and provide perioral structural support. It can also strike a better balance with the lips. When assessing the chin, the entire surrounding areas are also assessed as this area is commonly treated with other areas of the lower face.

MARIONETTE LINE SOFTENING

With age marionette wrinkles can start to appear and the corners of the mouth start to turn down. These wrinkles can be treated in various ways depending on the severity of the wrinkle. This treatment will be discussed in more detail during the consultation for volume replacement.

WHAT OTHER TREATMENTS CAN BE COMBINED WITH A CHIN RESHAPING TREATMENT?

Relaxing the masseter muscle contraction to lengthen the chin is a treatment that can be done before a chin volumising/ re- shaping treatment.

Central vertical neck bands (platysma bands) can be treated to alleviate any strain on the chin and jawline, to give a lifting effect of the lower face.

Skin treatments can also be performed to improve the quality, texture and tone of the skin. Some of these may also be used in combination to address skin concerns at the time.  More information can be found on the website that explain these treatments in detail, or book in a consultation so they can be discussed relevant to you.

Some other treatments my include and these are available in clinic.

HOW TO BOOK IN FOR THIS TREATMENT

A consultation to discuss your medical history and perform a facial assessment is the first step. This gives you the opportunity to discuss your goals and make an informed decision about the treatment, after receiving all the information about the risks and what the treatment entails.  It is during this discussion that costs are also given to you.  On the website you will be taken to the booking system. Look for Cosmetic Treatments and Consultations and then “Consultation for Facial Volume Loss”.

At Restore My Glow we don’t just look at treating a specific area but the impact of that area on the entire face. So, the chin isn’t normally treated in isolation, it is normally treated at the same time as the jawline and lower face.

Please note: Not all patients are suitable for all treatments and each patient is reviewed and consulted by a health care practitioner first, and depending on the outcome of the consultation, may or may not lead to the provision of a prescription and treatment.
