CHIN CREASE
mental crease & reducing chin dimpling

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CHIN AS WE AGE?

As we age the lower third of the face gets shorter and the chin begins to lose volume and fullness, making the chin appear shorter. The down turned corners of the mouth also become heavier.

A horizontal crease can develop in the chin, and with age it becomes deeper. The corners of the mouth start to turn down more and a pebbling like effect (orange peel texture) of the skin develops.

You may have noticed these lines and chin dimples when you smile, pout or speak.
As the chin gets shorter, in comparison to the other proportions of the face, it can make you look older than you are.

WHAT IS THE MENTALIS MUSCLE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

It is a muscle that sits at the tip of the chin and lower lip. It elevates and protrudes the lower lip and is responsible for chin wrinkles, creases and dimpling. It also everts the lower lip while eating and drinking.

WHAT DOES A CHIN TREATMENT INVOLVE?

The treatment can vary depending on the chin crease but normally starts with targeting the mentalis muscle first.

Reducing the contraction of the muscle can have many benefits in the chin by reducing the depth of the chin crease, reducing the pebbling / dimpled effect of the skin on the chin and lengthening the chin.  The overlying skin will then smooth out.

SOFTENING THE CHIN CREASE

Reducing the mentalis muscle activity and contraction will soften the horizontal crease in the chin and lengthen the chin. The mentalis muscle gets stronger with repetitive use, so reducing its strength helps to minimise the depth and severity of the wrinkle.
By reducing the mentalis muscle activity, the skin relaxes and chin wrinkles become less noticeable. This also lifts the chin area slightly, enhancing the definition in the jawline and subsequently a smoother chin and softer chin crease.

IF THE CHIN CREASE HAS BECOME A DEEP FURROW/ FOLD?

When the mentalis muscle has been relaxed and a chin wrinkle still remains, sculpting and volumising the chin is normally the next step- to replace lost volume This will soften the appearance of the mental crease, create more balance and a better side profile in the lower third of the face.

IMPROVING CHIN DIMPLING

The chin loses volume with age and loses it definition and shape.  It also appears less smooth with a dimpling like appearance. Relaxing the mentalis muscle also helps with reducing the appearance of chin dimpling or a pebble like effect of the skin.

LENGTHENING THE CHIN

Hyperactivity of the mentalis muscle also causes a shortening of the chin length.  Reducing the activity of the mentalis muscle relaxes the chin and projects the chin forward.
