LIP FLIP TREATMENT

BOTOX

Due to new advertising legislation on cosmetic procedures, anti-wrinkle will now be referred to as “wrinkle reducing” or “reducing the appearance of wrinkles” treatments. Dermal fillers will now be referred to as “volume replacers” “volume replacement” or “volumisers”. All medical procedures require patients to have a consultation first, to discuss their suitability for the treatment, and during this consultation the treatment is discussed in detail.

Question 1.
What is the recovery period like after a lip flip?

After undergoing a lip flip procedure, you can expect a swift and uncomplicated recovery. Most people find that they can return to their usual routine almost immediately. Here's what you should anticipate:

  • Minimal Downtime: Unlike more invasive treatments, a lip flip typically has little to no recovery time. Many patients go back to work or their regular activities the same day.

  • Possible Side Effects: You might notice some minor bruising or swelling at the injection site. Don't be alarmed; this is normal and usually subsides within a few hours or days at most.

  • Post-Procedure Care: Although there's no intensive aftercare required, it’s advised to avoid rubbing or massaging the area, keep your head elevated for the next 4 hours and avoid any lipstick or products on the treated area. This helps ensure that the treatment settles properly, but also preventing movement to adjacent muscles, and reducing the risk of an infection.

In short, the recovery period for a lip flip is typically uneventful, allowing most individuals to enjoy the subtle enhancement without significant interruption to their lives.

Question 2.

What products are used for a lip flip?

When it comes to achieving a seamless lip flip, the procedure typically involves the use of a medication that is superficially placed into the lip.  This helps to relax the muscles around the lips, giving them a slightly lifted and fuller appearance without needing invasive surgery.

Commonly Used Products

Due to advertising restrictions on cosmetic treatments, product names cannot be advertised or referred to, but after a consultation with your cosmetic nurse, they can be discussed in detail with you.

All products used are widely recognised and trusted globally for aesthetic and cosmetic purposes with only premium products used.

For more detailed insights into the products and processes involved in a lip flip, please book in your consultation.

Consultation Insights

This highlights the importance of the initial consultation as the entire treatment, products used, risks, benefits and techniques will all be discussed at length.  All your questions will be answered and all the information given to you to make an informed decision about what treatment will address your lip goals.

Question 3.

How much does a lip flip cost?

Costs and price lists have been removed from the website and social pages to comply with the new legislation on advertising cosmetic procedures. For a detailed cost a consultation is required, this can be performed by a facetime appointment or our preference is to come into the clinic face to face where your lips can properly be assessed.

As this is a medical procedure the cost of a lip flip can vary depending on several factors, including the individual characteristics of your facial muscles and the health care practitioner.  All costs are given at the time of your consultation.

Some patients may not be suitable for this treatment so alternative treatments will be discussed at the consultation.

Key Factors Influencing Cost:

  • Provider's Experience: More experienced practitioners might charge higher fees.

  • Geographical Location: Clinics in larger cities or upscale neighbourhoods often have higher pricing.

  • Clinic Specials and Packages: Clinics are not allowed to advertise the price, offer incentives for the treatment, or offer discounts on cosmetic treatments. Before proceeding, it's essential to schedule a consultation to discuss your goals and receive a personalised quote tailored to your needs.

Question 4.

Who is a good candidate for a lip flip?

If you've noticed that your upper lip is on the smaller side or tends to roll inward when you smile, you might be a suitable candidate for a lip flip. This cosmetic treatment can subtly enhance the appearance of your lips, sometimes without the need for volume replacement in the lips. Some will require both to address their lip goals.

However, it's important to note that not everyone is an ideal candidate. Professional musicians or singers who play instruments like the flute or trumpet should avoid this treatment. The treatment relaxes the muscle around the mouth, which can affect the ability to control these muscles, potentially impacting how one sings or plays an instrument.

Many patients choose to try a lip flip first to see what their lips might look like before committing to a lip augmentation/ volumising treatment.

As with any medical treatment, a detailed consultation is crucial. During this session, your medical history will be reviewed, and a thorough assessment of your facial anatomy will be conducted. Concerns, suitability for the treatment, the potential benefits, risks, side effects, and post-care instructions are discussed. Our team will answer all your questions, ensuring you can make an informed decision about the treatment, or an alternative treatment. Your suitability will then be discussed and, if deemed clinically and medically appropriate, authorised by our doctors.

How can someone find out if they are a good candidate for this procedure?

Scheduling a consultation with an experienced health care practitioner can help determine if you are a suitable candidate for the treatment. A thorough review of your medical history is also reviewed to determine suitability as some medical conditions may exclude you from having it.  For example, pre-existing medical conditions causing muscle weakness or myasthenia gravis, infection or broken skin at the treatment areas, currently taking antibiotics, pregnant or breast feeding or trying to conceive, or underlying nerve or muscle disorders.

What lip features indicate a potential benefit from this cosmetic procedure?

Individuals with a smaller upper lip or those whose top lip curls inward when smiling may find this treatment beneficial.

Question 5.

Are there any downsides to getting a lip flip?

Bruising, swelling, tenderness, and redness at the sites is possible. Initially, being able to suck through a straw, purse your lips to whistle, kiss, or drink from a takeaway coffee cup can be a little more difficult.

Depending on product placement and dose, an asymmetric smile or dribbling can occur. This risk is small but with any cosmetic procedures there are always potential risks. See side effects and risks summary on “reducing the appearance of wrinkles” (anti-wrinkle) page for further information or make your consultation appointment so we can discuss them in detail with you.

Additionally, it's important to consider that a lip flip may not be effective for everyone. If you regularly play musical instruments or give speeches, the sensation of a relaxed top lip might not be ideal for you. This treatment can influence the way you perform these activities, potentially affecting your comfort and performance.

While the procedure can offer desired aesthetic enhancements, understanding these possible downsides can help you make a more informed decision. Always consult with your health care practitioner to ensure that a lip flip aligns with your lifestyle and expectations.

Will a lip flip affect my ability to perform certain activities?

If you frequently engage in activities like playing musical instruments or giving speeches, you might find the sensation of a relaxed upper lip uncomfortable or disruptive.

Is a lip flip effective for everyone?

A lip flip may not work effectively for all individuals, as results can vary depending on personal factors.

Question 6.

Does the lip flip procedure hurt?

The product is placed into the lip border of the lip so some quick short acting stings can be felt. However, the discomfort is generally mild and tolerable for most individuals.

If you’re worried about potential pain, there are options to ease the experience. You can request a topical anaesthetic to numb the area or consider vibrational therapy, which many find effective in reducing the sensation. These methods help ensure that your procedure is as comfortable as possible, allowing you to focus on the exciting results ahead. Our clinic is a warm and relaxing environment with relaxing music playing so patient comfort is important to us from the moment you arrive.

What can be done to reduce the pain?

To help minimise any discomfort, you might consider asking for a numbing cream, ice, a stress ball, or trying vibrational therapy for a more pleasant experience.

Is the pain tolerable?

Yes, the discomfort is generally manageable, so most patients find it quite bearable.

What does the sensation feel like?

The sensation during the procedure can be compared to a minor pinch or short acting sting, giving you an idea of the mild discomfort involved.

Question 7.

What should I expect during a lip flip consultation and procedure?

A consultation is performed first to give you all the information to make an informed decision about the treatment.  You will be given the opportunity to speak with a doctor about your treatment and ask any further questions.

During this initial appointment, you'll be invited to share your goals for the lip flip procedure. If you're aiming for a specific improvement, your health care practitioner will assess your lips to determine the appropriate amount of product to use.

Should you desire extra volume that a lip flip alone can't provide, a recommendation for a lip augmentation or alternative treatment may be made.

Your lips are cleansed and the points of product placement are marked out with a make-up pencil.  The products used will be explained in detail, allowing you to choose which is most suitable for you. Additionally, the risks of the procedure, any potential downtime, and specific aftercare instructions will be thoroughly outlined.

It is a relatively short procedure with a small dose of product placed into the lip. It will take less than 15 minutes. They are placed into the lip border, so some quick, short-acting stings can be felt.

Before starting the procedure, photos will be taken and stored confidentially to track your progress. Once your treatment is complete, you'll receive specific aftercare instructions, and a complimentary follow-up appointment will be arranged within the next fortnight.

The product will begin to work within 3 days but takes 10-14 days to see the final result.

Is there a follow-up appointment, and what does it entail?

A complimentary follow-up appointment is arranged within the next two weeks after your procedure. This appointment is designed to monitor your progress and address any questions or concerns you might have post-treatment.

Comparing before and after photos is also done at this time.  If your desired results are not achieved, alternative treatments will also be discussed that are relevant to you. For new patients this is an important appointment to achieve the correct dose and balance of muscle movement.  After achieving this correct dose most patients don’t need to attend follow ups, but they are always available to them.

Is there any documentation or photography involved in the process?

Yes, photos will be taken before the procedure to document your lips. These images are stored confidentially and help the healthcare professional assess your progress over time. These are never shared on any platforms as before and after photos are now not permitted to be shared- this is to comply with the new advertising guidelines on cosmetic treatments.

What are the risks, downtime, and aftercare instructions associated with the procedure?

The consultation will cover the potential risks and expected downtime of the procedure. You'll also be given specific aftercare instructions to ensure the best results and minimise any potential complications. The doctor who authorised the treatment is also available 24 hours a day for assistance if needed.

Risks: The risks are potential bruising, swelling, tenderness, and redness at the sites. Depending on product placement and dose, an asymmetric smile or dribbling can occur. This risk is small but with any cosmetic procedures there are always potential risks. See side effects and risks summary on “reducing the appearance of wrinkles” (anti-wrinkle).

Downtime: minimal to none as the procedure is short and you can return to your normal routine.

Aftercare: To not rub, move or touch the treated area that day. Do not apply lipstick to minimise the risk of infection. Avoid exercise or extremes of temperature (e.g. saunas, hot showers) for 24 hours and to keep your head elevated for 4 hours post treatment.

What options are available for the products used, and how are they selected?

You'll receive detailed information about the different product options available for the procedure at the time of the consultation.  This allows you to make an informed choice about which product is most suitable for your specific needs and desired outcomes. Discussing brand names and products is not permitted by law, until a consultation has been performed.

What is discussed during the initial consultation?

During the initial consultation, you'll discuss your goals for the lip flip procedure with a healthcare professional. They will assess your lips to determine the right amount of product needed and may suggest additional treatments, such as lip volumisers or alternative treatments, if you're seeking more volume than a lip flip alone can provide. If for some reason you are not suitable for either treatment, there are many skin treatments that may help to achieve your lip goals.
