LIP LINE TREATMENT
with dermal fillers

Lines around the mouth, or perioral lines, are commonly referred to as smokers’ lines, even if you have never been a smoker. These lines can be softened with dermal fillers. Treating these fine lines and wrinkles are regularly treated at the same time as a lip volumising treatment.

What causes upper lip lines and how do lips change over time?

Upper lip lines and lines around the mouth can be one of the first signs of ageing.  As we age our skin becomes thinner as collagen and elastin decreases, making the lips less plump and the skin less elastic.  Lines and wrinkles then appear.

The distance between the top lip and under the nose gets larger, making it look longer, and the top lip flattens and gets thinner.

The lower third of the face gets shorter and the mouth starts to go inwards- due to bone loss and volume loss as well as skin changes with a decline of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Vertical lines appear in the lips, and above the lips, and these can extend from the lips to the top of the nose. They can resemble a “bar code” appearance.

The corners of the mouth start to turn downwards giving the appearance of a sad face.

Repetitive muscle movements can also make the lines around the mouth deeper.

Sun exposure, alcohol consumption, excess sugar, diet, lifestyle factors, smoking and other environmental factors all contribute to upper lip lines, and these accelerate the signs of the ageing process.

HOW TO TREAT FINE LINES AROUND THE MOUTH & UPPER LIP LINES

All of these age-related changes can be addressed when treating the perioral lines and lines around the mouth.

The procedure involves injecting a dermal filler that is made up of hyaluronic acid. It is a naturally occurring substance (complex sugar) that adds volume, and softens and smooths out creases and wrinkles, while providing structure, support, definition and skin elasticity.

These sugars are already present in your body and skin and these start to diminish as we age.

Sometimes a multi-modality approach of treatments is needed to soften these lines.  A combination of treatments including anti-wrinkle injections into the lip lines to prevent the repetitive muscle movement, then 2 weeks later (when the anti-wrinkle is working) soften the lines with dermal fillers. Anti-wrinkle injections limit the amount the muscle around the mouth can contract so the lip lines soften and the skin appears smoother.

Depending on wrinkle severity, skin changes and volume loss, some patients benefit from other treatments. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), skin needling, skin booster injections, laser and chemical peels can work in combination with dermal fillers to improve the skin integrity, condition of the skin, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Using medical grade skincare and daily SPF 50+ is also recommended.

Lip line treatments can take multiple sessions and may need more than 1 syringe of dermal filler to soften all the lines around and in the mouth. Fine line softening is usually performed with a soft dynamic filler, that allows for maintaining natural facial expressions and movement around the mouth.  All our dermal fillers used are premium dermal fillers.

Not sure what treatment to book in for?

With a variety of treatments available it can be confusing so the first step is to make an online appointment for a consultation. A detailed consultation will be performed to assess your face and your lip lines, discuss your medical history and listen to your goals. It gives you the opportunity to speak with a doctor about your treatment and to gather all the information you need to make an informed decision. It is during this time the risks, treatment itself, and post care instructions are discussed.
